KATHMANDU, JUL 30 - Dr Govinda KC , a senior orthopaedic surgeon at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH), has warned of resorting to another round of fast-unto-death from August 22 if government remains non-committal to the past agreements. Speaking at a press meet organised on the premises of TUTH on Thursday, Dr KC focused more on government's deceit in not making the Health Profession Education Policy. "This clearly shows the intention of the government. Even a month after the report submission, it has not been released. So we are really not assured if that will be implemented," said Dr KC. "It is a ploy to bring down all the achievements of the past." Alleging the government of serving the interests of "medical mafias", Dr KC said he will wait for a week before beginning his hunger-strike. A week back, Dr KC had issued similar warning asking the government to make the Mathema-committee report public. The Kedar Bhakta Mathema-led committee had submitted the report to Prime Minister Sushil Koirala on June 29. The committee has made a slew of recommendations, including establishing medical colleges only outside Kathmandu Valley, setting the MBBS fee ceiling to Rs 3.5 million, limiting the numbers of students to be admitted to 100. Dr KC has also demanded the government to fill the vacant post based on seniority and merit instead of political affiliations and end the crisis at the Janakpur-based Janaki Medical College. He has already staged five fast-unto-death s demanding an end to the political meddling and reforms in medical education.
