POKHARA, JUL 13 - Drinking water distributed in Pokhara Sub-metropolis and Lekhnath Municipality in Kaski is found to have been contaminated, health officials said. According to the District Public Health Office (DPHO), laboratory tests showed that the water contained faecal coliform. Experts said consumption of such water contaminated with coliform can cause typhoid, diarrhoea, jaundice and dysentery. They said the similar contamination was the major reason behind an outbreak of jaundice that claimed 11 lives in Biratnagar last year. DPHO officials said they had collected samples from Lekhnath Small Town Drinking Water Project and various other places in Pokhara and found that as many as 42 coliform bacteria were seen in 100 ml of water . According to experts, water containing more than 10 bacteria per 100 ml is unsafe for drinking. DPHO Vector Control Inspector Yam Baral confirmed that drinking water being distributed in Lekhnath Small Town Drinking Water Project was found to have been contaminated. DPHO chief Sagar Prasad Ghimire urged the public to drink water only after boiling it.
