GAIDAKOT, JUL 29 - After nearly 23 hours of transport obstruction, traffic resumed along the Gaidakot stretch of the East-West Highway in Nawalparasi district on Tuesday. Vehicular movement along the stretch had come to a complete halt after a 32-metre long truss bridge over Jayashree stream caved in on Monday evening. A diversion has been built to resume the traffic flow, said Deepak Bhattarai, chief engineer at the Butwal-based Road Division Office. Passenger buses that had been stranded on the highway were first to be allowed the passage after the diversion was completed. Bhattarai said they will observe the condition of the diversion overnight before allowing trucks and other heavy vehicles traverse the diversion route built over the stream. The 36 years old bridge gave way when two Narayangadh-bound tippers and a truck travelling from the opposite direction were crossing it at the same time. Uttam Lal Pradhan, the chief at Western Regional Road Directorate in Pokhara, said that the bridge caved in as it could not hold the load.
